Katenka June Wolsky (born August 13, 1987) is an English actress best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in fantasy television series "Game of Thrones". She has garnered attention for her recent roles in award winning Birdman and science fiction thriller Ex Machina. She will star in Rogue One, the first standalone Star Wars film due for release in 2016.
Early Life
Wolsky was born in Wokingham, Berkshire, England to structural engineer Isak Wolsky and human resources manager Veronica Wolsky. Her father is of Russian Jewish descent. She is one of three children, with an older sister who teaches English Literature and fraternal twin brother Abram, an established musician.
In secondary school, she took 11 GCSEs and 4 A-level exams. From 2006 to 2009, she attended the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama where she studied acting.
Career
Wolsky's first role was on the television crime drama "Luther", but it was soon after that she was cast in HBO's "Game of Thrones", an adaption of author George R. R. Martin's fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. She would play a leading role of Daenerys Targaryen, replacing actress Tamzin Merchant who dropped out of the role for undisclosed reasons. Wolsky has stated that she read all of Daenerys' chapters in the novels so she could better understand the role. She has since received two Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in this role.
Her first film role was in Like Crazy, a romance drama that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received praise for the performance of its two young leads. She went on to land roles in the horror fantasy Byzantium and post-apocalyptic science film Oblivion, in which she starred alongside Tom Cruise. She was part of the acting ensemble in Alejandro Iñárritu's Birdman which won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
Most recently, Wolsky starred in science fiction thriller Ex Machina as an A.I. called Ava and Guillermo Del Toro's gothic romance Crimson Peak. She provided the voice and motion capture for co-protagonist Evie Frye in Assassin's Creed Syndicate.
She was announced to be the star of Rogue One, the first in a series of standalone Star Wars anthology films, set for release in 2016.
Personal Life
Wolsky is incredibly private about her life outside of acting and prefers to keep attention on her roles than herself. She has in several instances garnered attention for deflecting personal questions from the press.
In 2014, Wolsky's private Facebook account was hacked and many posts leaked. Some of the contents led to questioning of Wolsky's sexuality, on which she refused to comment. She has since deleted the account, but maintains an official presence on Twitter and Instagram.
She has kept residence in London since 2006, and reportedly bought an apartment in Los Angeles summer of 2013.
